Federal Law There is no federal law specifically addressing the concealed carry of firearms in vehicles. However, federal law does regulate the transport of firearms across state lines under the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA).

State Laws

Each state has its own laws regarding concealed carry in vehicles, which can be generally categorized into a few types:

  • Permit Required : In many states, you need a concealed carry permit to legally carry a concealed firearm in your vehicle.
  • Permitless Carry : Some states allow concealed carry without a permit, often referred to as "constitutional carry." In these states, you can carry a concealed firearm in your vehicle without a permit.
  • No Carry Zones : Certain states or municipalities may have specific restrictions on where you can carry a concealed firearm, including in vehicles.   • Hands Visible : Keep your hands visible, ideally on the steering wheel, where the officer can see them. This helps to avoid any perception of a threat.
  • Inform the Officer : Inform the officer that you have a firearm in your vehicle, do so calmly and clearly. Use a phrase like, "Officer, I need to inform you that I have a firearm in the vehicle. It is located [state the location]. I have a [concealed carry permit/license] for it."
  • Follow Instructions : Carefully follow the officer's instructions. They may ask you to provide your driver's license, registration, proof of insurance, and your concealed carry permit (if applicable).
  • Do Not Reach for the Firearm : Never reach for your firearm or make any movements towards it unless explicitly instructed by the officer.
  • Answer Questions Honestly : Answer any questions the officer may have truthfully and directly. Avoid volunteering unnecessary information.
